"The Accident of Geography"
"The Archbishop spoke poignantly about the “accident of geography,” insisting that we cannot let this accident determine the future of young girls, and pledging that he will devote the same commitment and energy to ending child marriage as he did to ending apartheid."(Vital Voices Global Partnership article)

In Burma woman, children, and girls are looked down upon or as Daw Aung San Suu Kyi says "women in Burma remain “second citizens.”" I think the Archbishop tutu is correct, this seeing of woman being second to men and not equal was an accident in the world that should have never occurred to begin with and now that its still in present day in Burma is even worse. Woman should not have to give themselves to a man to be married when she is still only a child and he is near his last days of living. I think child marriage should definitely end because girls need to be children not woman who marry and live a life without childhood and their teens years.
Well said! It's really weird to think about old guys marrying adolescent girls. Then what happens if the girl has a child and the guy dies and now there is no one to provide for them? This system seems flawed.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it is very weird that young girls have to marry older men and do whatever that man wants when they should be enjoying their childhood. It is sad that that is all they are used to and they don't know what it is like to live what we consider a "normal" adolescent life.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting and great responses from Blake and Eden!
